WALT DISNEY – THE FATHER OF MICKEY MOUSE Walt Disney is famous around the world for creating Mickey Mouse and founding one of the largest entertainment companies in history. Childhood and education He was born in Chicago, the USA, in 1901. As a boy, he loved drawing and selling his sketches to neighbours. He attended McKinley High School in Chicago, where he studied drawing and photography, and also took night classes at an art institute. Achievements Walt Disney was a very successful film-maker, who created the world-famous character Mickey Mouse in 1928. He produced the first full-length animated film, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. Apart from making films, he was also famous for building Disneyland, a theme park loved by millions of people. Family He had several brothers and sisters, and he married Lillian Bounds, with whom he had two daughters. Death and the continued success of The Walt Disney Studios He died in 1966, but The Walt Disney Studios has continued to grow and remains one of the most successful film companies today.

• Mark: (1) I'm on top of the world! I've just learnt that my poem about Viet Nam's national heroes has won the first prize in the poetry competition for teenagers.
• Nam: (2) That's fantastic! It's a very inspiring poem.

→ Mark đang cực kỳ vui vì đoạt giải, nên dùng I'm on top of the world (vui sướng tột độ – đây là người thể hiện niềm vui). Nam đáp lại bằng That's fantastic (Tuyệt vời quá).

Hội thoại 2:

• Phong: I took part in a public-speaking event and gave a talk about Steve Jobs' innovations in technology. (3) It was such a pleasure to be among so many talented speakers. They invited me to give another presentation.
• Mai: (4) I'm so happy for you! I've always thought you're a great speaker.

→ Phong kể về niềm vui khi tham gia sự kiện, nên dùng It was such a pleasure to... (Thật vui/vinh hạnh khi được...). Mai đáp lại bằng I'm so happy for you (Mình mừng cho bạn quá).

Phân biệt: câu (1) và (3) là bày tỏ niềm vui của chính người nói; câu (2) và (4) là phản hồi để chia vui với người kia.

Các mẫu câu hữu ích (trang 17):

• Đáp lại: Wow!; I'm so happy/excited for you; Good for you!; That's fantastic/amazing/great!; I'm pleased to hear (that you like it).

on cloud nine / over the moon / on top of the world đều là thành ngữ chỉ trạng thái "vui sướng vô cùng".

Dịch & tóm tắt bài đọc "Queens of the world" (Những nữ hoàng của thế giới)

Mở đầu: Người ta nói rằng phụ nữ có thể trị vì các vương quốc, và một số người đã thực sự làm được. Dưới đây là ba trong số những nữ hoàng nổi tiếng nhất trong lịch sử thế giới.

1. Cleopatra VII (69 TCN – 30 TCN)

• Nữ hoàng Ai Cập cổ đại (trị vì từ 51 TCN đến 30 TCN).
• Nổi tiếng vì sự quyết tâm (determination) và sắc đẹp (beauty).
• Rất thông minh, học thức cao, biết nói chín thứ tiếng.
• Dưới sự trị vì của bà, Ai Cập là quốc gia giàu mạnh và giữ được độc lập trước Đế chế La Mã đang bành trướng.

2. Elizabeth I (1533 – 1603)

3. Catherine II (1729 – 1796)

• Vốn là công chúa Đức nhỏ, sau được gọi là Catherine Đại đế, trị vì nước Nga từ 1762 đến 1796.
• Thông minh, đầy tham vọng, tận tụy với đất nước nhận nuôi mình.
• Mở rộng Đế chế Nga thêm hơn 500.000 km².
• Cải thiện giáo dục cho trẻ em và phụ nữ, mở trường nữ sinh đầu tiên ở Nga.
• Thời bà có nhiều phát triển lớn về kiến trúc, thương mại và văn hóa.
