Bài 2: Put the words and phrases in the correct order to make reported questions

Sắp xếp từ thành câu tường thuật (reported question). Nhớ quy tắc: câu hỏi tường thuật đưa về dạng khẳng định (S + V), lùi thì.

1. My little brother asked me how many moons Venus had.

(Em trai tôi hỏi tôi sao Kim có bao nhiêu mặt trăng.)

1. She wanted to know which planet was the closest to the sun.

(Cô ấy muốn biết hành tinh nào gần Mặt Trời nhất.)

1. The journalist asked the scientists what they were using telescopes in space for.

(Nhà báo hỏi các nhà khoa học họ dùng kính viễn vọng trong không gian để làm gì.)
→ Từ để hỏi gốc là "What ... for?" nên "for" đặt ở cuối câu.

1. The scientists wanted to know when humans would be able to travel to Mars.

(Các nhà khoa học muốn biết khi nào con người có thể du hành tới sao Hỏa.)

1. He asked the professor what the conditions for a planet to have life on it were.

(Anh ấy hỏi giáo sư những điều kiện để một hành tinh có sự sống là gì.)

Bài 3: Change the following questions into reported questions

Đổi câu hỏi trực tiếp sang gián tiếp: lùi thì, đổi đại từ, bỏ dấu hỏi, đưa về trật tự S + V.

1. "Who will be the first to step on Mars?" Mary asked the scientist.

→ Mary asked the scientist who would be the first to step on Mars.
(will → would)

1. "How fast can a UFO travel?" I asked my father.

→ I asked my father how fast a UFO could travel.
(can → could)

1. The student asked his friend, "How many craters does the moon have?"

→ The student asked his friend how many craters the moon had.
(does have → had)

1. The pupils asked the teacher, "Where can we find information about the solar system?"

→ The pupils asked the teacher where they could find information about the solar system.
(we → they; can → could)

1. "What is the weather on Mars like?" I asked my teacher.

→ I asked my teacher what the weather on Mars was like.
(is → was)

Bài 4: Report the conversation between An and Mai

Đoạn hội thoại:

• An: What are you reading, Mai?
• Mai: I'm reading Aliens, and I'm almost done.
• An: What kind of book is it?
• Mai: It's science fiction.
• An: What's it about?
• Mai: It's about three aliens who try to take over Earth.

Bài tường thuật mẫu:

An asked Mai what she was reading. Mai told An (that) she was reading Aliens and (that) she was almost done. An asked Mai what kind of book it was. Mai told An (that) it was science fiction. An asked Mai what it was about. Mai told An (that) it was about three aliens who tried to take over Earth.

Giải thích: tất cả động từ lùi thì (are reading → was reading, is → was), đại từ "you/I" đổi theo người nói.

Bài 5: Speaking – hỏi bạn về thói quen hằng ngày rồi tường thuật

Em hỏi bạn 5 câu, ghi lại câu trả lời, sau đó tường thuật. Mẫu:

Câu hỏi mẫu hỏi bạn:

• What time do you get up?
• What do you have for breakfast?
• How do you go to school?
• What time do you do your homework?
• When do you go to bed?

Tường thuật trước lớp:

I asked Nam what time he got up and he told me (that) he got up at six o'clock. I asked him what he had for breakfast and he said (that) he had bread and milk. I asked him how he went to school and he told me (that) he went by bike...

Bài 1: Listen and read the conversations

Đọc và chú ý cách diễn đạt sự không chắc chắn (expressing uncertainty):

1. Nick: Do you think Mars may support life?

Mark: I'm not sure about it. Scientists are trying to find life there.

1. Mary: Do you think Ann will win tomorrow?

Tommy: I doubt it. She injured her arm in a match last week.

Hai cách nói khi mình không chắc/nghi ngờ:

• I'm not sure about it. = Tôi không chắc về điều đó.
• I doubt it. = Tôi nghi ngờ điều đó / Tôi e là không.

Bài 2: Make similar conversations

Tạo hội thoại tương tự cho 3 tình huống. Gợi ý mẫu:

1. Không chắc có nước trên sao Hỏa:

• A: Do you think there is water on Mars?
• B: I'm not sure about it. Scientists are still studying it.

1. Nghi ngờ bạn đạt điểm cao bài kiểm tra Tiếng Anh:

• A: Do you think Mai will get a good mark on the English test?
• B: I doubt it. She didn't study much last week.

1. Không chắc thời tiết ngày mai có đẹp không:

• A: Do you think the weather will be fine tomorrow?
• B: I'm not sure about it. It's been cloudy all day.

Bài 3: Read the information and answer the questions

Thông tin các hành tinh:

• Mercury (sao Thủy): nhỏ nhất, gần Mặt Trời nhất, không có mặt trăng; rất nóng ban ngày nhưng rất lạnh ban đêm; không có khí quyển.
• Jupiter (sao Mộc): hành tinh lớn nhất, khoảng 63 mặt trăng; nhiều bão nhất; vật thể sáng thứ ba trên bầu trời đêm.
• Venus (sao Kim): hành tinh nóng nhất, không có mặt trăng; to gần bằng Trái Đất; thường rất sáng vào sáng sớm → người ta gọi là "sao Mai" (the morning star).

Trả lời câu hỏi:

1. What planets have no moon?

→ Mercury and Venus have no moon.

1. What planet is similar in size to Earth?

→ Venus is similar in size to Earth. (gần to bằng Trái Đất)

1. What planet is the smallest and closest to the sun?

→ Mercury is the smallest and closest to the sun.

1. What planet is called the morning star?

→ Venus is called the morning star.

1. What is the largest and stormiest planet?

→ Jupiter is the largest and stormiest planet.

Bài 4: Match the three planets with the pictures

Dựa vào đặc điểm để ghép:

1. (Hành tinh màu cam đỏ rực) → Venus (sao Kim, nóng nhất)
2. (Hành tinh xám, nhiều hố lõm) → Mercury (sao Thủy, nhỏ, đầy hố thiên thạch)
3. (Hành tinh có các dải vằn, vết đỏ lớn) → Jupiter (sao Mộc, có Vết Đỏ Lớn nổi tiếng)

Bài 5: Talk about one of the three planets

Lần lượt nói về một hành tinh. Bài nói mẫu (về Jupiter):

I would like to tell you about Jupiter. It is the largest planet in the solar system and it has about 63 moons. It is the stormiest planet. Jupiter is also the third brightest object in the night sky. It is really an amazing planet.

Từ vựng cần nhớ: moon (mặt trăng), atmosphere (khí quyển), stormiest (nhiều bão nhất), bright (sáng), the morning star (sao Mai).
